INSTALLATION
============
To install DMS/IB from the installation disk, place the installation
disk in drive A: and type the following at your DOS or OS/2 prompt:
A:INSTALL A C
You can change the source and target drive letters (A and C) as
appropriate to your system.
If you are upgrading from a previous version of DMS/IB, you will be
asked what to do with the existing version of DMS/IB.
After you typed the install command, DMS/IB copies the program files to
a subdirectory called DMSDIR on your hard disk. Then DMS/IB asks a few
questions about your system configuration file, called CONFIG.SYS, and
your system startup file, called AUTOEXEC.BAT. DMS/IB creates or
changes CONFIG.SYS with the two statements that will be invoked each
time your system is turned on. The statements are:
BUFFERS=30
FILES=15
These statements will not damage your system in any way, but they
improve performance for backup processing.
AUTOEXEC.BAT is a DOS command file that is invoked each time your
system is turned on. You have the option of putting our "Auto-Backup
Commands" in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file so that you will be prompted to run
backup each day. This can be a useful reminder and when you are asked
if you would like to install this feature, we suggest that you answer
yes. If you now have a file called AUTOEXEC.BAT in the root directory
of your hard disk, you must decide at which line to place the
auto-backup commands. Usually, you should place the auto-backup
commands at the end of the file. If you do not have an AUTOEXEC.BAT
file, DMS/IB will create one for you automatically.
HOW TO RUN DMS/IB
=================
After you install DMS/IB, be sure to reboot your system. Reboot by
pressing the <CTRL> <ALT> <DEL> keys simultaneously. This process will
reinitialize your system so that system will recognize any changes to
the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT. To start DMS/IB, from the operating
system prompt, type the following command:
IB
press the <ENTER> key then. From this point on, the few keys that your
need to use are: the cursor control keys, the <ESC> key, and the <F1>
key. The cursor control keys (up, down, right, and left arrow keys)
will the highlighted selection bar over the function for every menu.
Once you position the highlight bar over the function you wish to
perform, just press the <ENTER> key to begin that process.
Generally, you can press the <ESC> key to quit the current function and
return you to the prior menu. The <F1> key (function key 1) will
always present you with HELP on the specific subject where your cursor
is positioned. The HELP system should be used as your explanatory
documentation. You can even use the DMS/IB HELP system as a tutorial
by starting at the beginning (home position), and scrolling through
each screen by pressing
<ENTER>.
FILE MAINTENANCE
================
The third selection on the DMS/IB Main Menu is File Maintenance. This
area of the program can handle most of your disk and file management
routines. All our displays are menu driven selection made with the
cursor keys and a reverse-video highlight bar. The commands you can
use are always shown at the bottom of the display.
File Maintenance has two basic displays. The first display is the
Directory Name Selection List, which lets you to process and examine
subdirectories. The other display is the Filename Selection List which
lets you process and examine files within a selected subdirectory.
BACKUP
======
After selecting Backup from the Main Menu, DMS/IB will scan the
selected hard disk and determine the optimum backup level. Press
<ENTER> to confirm DMS/IB's recommendation, DMS/IB will then begin
asking you to mount your backup diskettes. The status display shows
the estimated, completed, and remaining time and disks.
DMS/IB offers three levels of backup. FULL backup level is where all
files of all subdirectories are backed up. This process considers any
selections and exclusions you may have implemented. UPDATE backup
level will backup only the files that have been modified since your
last backup. These modified or new files are appended on the end of
your current backup set letting you have more than one version of each
file backed up. When you start UPDATE backup, DMS/IB will ask you to
mount the current last backup disk so that it may add files to your
set; when that disk is full, DMS/IB will ask you to mount a new backup
disk. The CONSOLIDATE backup level eliminates all backup files which
have are more recent version backed up. After selecting CONSOLIDATE,
DMS/IB will ask you to mount some--but not all--of the disks so that it
may rewrite new backup files over the space where old backup copies
used to reside.
Since DMS/IB identifies each diskette by a volume number, you must
label your disks showing the volume number so you can locate them when
DMS/IB asks you to mount a disk. The Utilities option from the Main
Menu has a disk label printing function that you may use to produce
personalized numbered disk labels.
DMS/IB keeps an index of every file it backs up. It records information
on date and time of the last modification for each file; date and time
of backup for each file; complete subdirectory and pathname for each
file; volume number where the most current version of each file can be
located; whether or not the file has been deleted from the hard disk or
currently exists on the hard disk; and much more. This index is stored
on the hard disk with the DMS/IB program files. Also, a backup copy of
the index is always placed on the Last Backup Diskette.
RESTORE
=======
After selecting Restore from the Main Menu, DMS/IB will ask you what
you would like to restore: all files or selected files.
Our restore function must be used to restore backup files from your
backup disks. Since the files are compacted and compressed on the
backup volumes, you must invoke our restore feature to put the files
back onto the hard disk if they have been deleted or corrupted. You
can control the files to be restored: you may restore all files; you
may restore an entire subdirectory; you may restore a single file; you
may restore a group of related files or subdirectories by using
wildcard characters.
Once you have specified the files you want to consider restoring,
DMS/IB gives you the option of generating a list of qualifying files.
From that list you can MARK files and then restore only marked files.
This is helpful if you are not sure of the name of the file(s) you want
to restore or if you want to restore an older version of a file.
SETUP
=====
When you select this option from the Main Menu, DMS/IB displays the
Setup Menu. There is context-sensitive help for each field on each
setup screen. While the cursor is on each field, press <F1> to get
more information on that particular field. Each item on the menu is
described below:
SPECIFY BACKUP SETUP OPTIONS - Select this to change the default
settings for resetting archive bit after backup, backup reporting,
how many diskettes in your pool, data compression method, and
whether or not to use the enhanced floppy i/o feature to speed up
your backup, etc. Review these settings before starting your first
backup to prevent unexpected results.
SELECT/EXCLUDE FILES FOR BACKUP - This feature lets you enter
criteria that specify which subdirectories and/or files you want to
select for backup or exclude from backup. You should exclude all
temporary or permanent swap files or other kinds of temporary files
that will never need to be restored. The exclusion capability is a
powerful function of DMS/IB and can cause unexpected results if you
do not implement it properly. Please read the appropriate parts of
the HELP system before making any selections or exclusions. You may
obtain HELP by pressing <F1> after reaching the Setup Menu.
SPECIFY RESTORE SETUP OPTIONS - When you select this option, DMS/IB
displays the default settings for resetting the archive bit after
restore, restore reporting, whether or not to overwrite duplicate
files, etc.
SPECIFY GLOBAL SETUP OPTIONS - When you select this option, DMS/IB
displays the default settings for defining your printer information,
sound, read/write verify, history file updating, user id, etc.
SOURCE / TARGET LOCATIONS - When you select this option, DMS/IB
displays the default settings for source / target locations. You
can backup to any device with a drive letter plus certain SCSI
150MB tape drives. Other options on this screen are the source
and target drive for restore, multitasking environments, skipping
open files, etc.
DISK DRIVE DEFINITIONS - When you select this option, DMS/IB
displays the default settings for defining the disk drives on
your PC. Definitions must be made for hard drives, floppy drives,
removable disk cartridges, and tape drives. It also displays the
default capacity for each drive.
UTILITIES
=========
When you select this option from the Main Menu, DMS/IB displays the
Utilities Menu. Each item on the menu is described below:
VERIFY BACKUP DISKETTES ARE RESTORABLE - This function lets you find
out if your backup files are restorable. First you specify which
backup files to verify (if not all of them) and DMS/IB will ask you
to mount the appropriate disks. Files are specified in the same
way files are specified for restore. During this process, DMS/IB
will report any errors (if there are any). This is helpful if you
suspect that your diskettes that were mishandled or damaged.
INITIALIZE BACKUP INDEX - This function erases your current backup
index. Use this if you are going to start a new FULL backup with
new backup disks.
RECOVER BACKUP INDEX FROM DISKETTES - This function is very
important if your hard disk crashes; that is, if your hard disk
mechanically breaks down or is accidentally formatted. If this
occurs, you must use this function to recover the backup indexes
before you can begin the restore process. The current backup index
is always on the last backup disk you used.
LIST FILES BACKED UP - This function lets your obtain a scrollable
and printable list of all or some of the files which have been
backed up. You simply enter the selection criteria for the files
you would like to see listed. The selection criteria is entered
the same way files are specified for restore.
VIEW THE BACKUP HISTORY FILE - By selecting this item, you can see a
history of when your backups were taken, how much time and how many
disks were used, how much data was backed up, what type of backup
was done, etc. This is a standard ASCII text file that is displayed
using the DMS/IB full screen editor.
PRINT BACKUP DISKETTE LABELS - This function is a useful utility for
printing your own personalized and numbered backup disk labels on
your printer.
OTHER INFORMATION
=================
DMS/IB can use "command parameters". Command parameters are words that
are added on the "IB" command that you type in when you begin DMS/IB.
Instead of just typing "IB", you would type...
IB x
where "x" represents a word (or parameter) from the list below.
BACKUP:UPDATE This will invoke our Auto-Backup feature so that DMS/IB
skips over the menus and automatically starts an update
level backup without your having to make menu selections.
The word UPDATE can also be replaced by the words FULL or
CONSOLIDATE. Here is an example of how to enter this in
at your DOS C> prompt:
IB BACKUP:UPDATE
BDATE:19MAR87 This will cause DMS/IB to only backup files which have
been modified or created on or after the specified
date. You may use any date in place of the example
date, but the format must be the same.
BDRIVE:x The "x" should be replaced by the letter of the source
drive that you want backed up. This overrides the
drive specified in the backup options.
INDEX:x The "x" should be replaced with a number 2 through 9.
This specifies an alternate index to use instead of
DMS/IB's normal default index. This may be helpful for
keeping two sets of backup disks.
VOLI:nn This can be invoked if you wish to include only one
specific volume in the restore or verify processes.
You must replace the "nn" in the example with a backup
disk volume number such as "01" or "35". DMS/IB will only
ask you to mount that specific volume.
VOLX:nn This can be invoked if you wish to exclude only one
specific volume from the restore or verify processes.
You must replace the "nn" in the example with a backup
disk volume number such as "01" or "35". DMS/IB will not
ask you to mount that specific volume. This can be
useful if there is an unrecoverable error on a backup
disk due to media damage.
There are many other command parameters available for managing
multiple hard disks, off-site backups, alternate indexes, automatic
batch file backup, etc. The user's guide that comes in the regular
DMS/IB package documents all of these functions, or see the HELP
system by pressing <F1> while DMS/IB is running.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR
FOR LOCAL AREA NETWORK USERS
----------------------------
If you are going to run DMS/IB in a LAN environment, you must have
the networking option turned on. To do this, go to the Main Menu,
then select the Setup menu. Next, select the Global Options menu.
Change the option called "Are you running in a LAN" to YES. Press
<ENTER> until you get to the bottom of the screen, then save your
changes.
You also must consider how you'd like DMS/IB to handle files that
are open on the network. Some files will always be open by the
operating system, and other may be open by other users or
application programs. You can tell DMS/IB how to handle open files
on the Setup Backup Options screen by going to the Main Menu, then
select the Setup menu. Next, select the Global Options menu.
Change the option called "Backup open files in the LAN" to the
appropriate value. Press <ENTER> until you get to the bottom of
the screen, then save your changes.

NOTICE ABOUT DISK CACHING
-------------------------
If you are using special software (device drivers) to speed up disk
access, please disable this software before running DMS/IB. DMS/IB
may work with some hard disk caching software, but do not run any
floppy disk caching software while using our product.
The following hard disk caching programs work fine with DMS/IB:
- IBMCACHE.SYS
- Instacache
- PC-Cache (comes with PC-Tools)
If you are using another hard disk caching program that is working
well with DMS/IB, please let our technical support staff know. This
way we can add it to our list of approved programs.
